NEHAWU Calls For An Immediate End Of The Illegal Embargo By The USA On Cuba

Saturday October 27, 2018

The National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union [NEHAWU] calls for an immediate end to the illegal embargo by the United State of America [USA] on Cuba. The embargo has been in place since 19th October 1960 almost two years after the Cuban Revolution that led to the deposition of the Fulgencio Batista dictatorial regime. The blockade is an illegal commercial, economic, and financial embargo that has been in existence for the past 59 years.

As NEHAWU, we note the reversal of the strides made by Obama by the Trump administration. The national union believes that the decisions by the Trump administration necessitates that we continue giving support to Cuba especially in fighting the criminal economic blockade by the US. The national union is going to revive its solidarity campaigns and also pay attention to improved relations with the Cubans more especially around the Nurses Training Program and ideological education. As NEHAWU, We reiterate our call that the anti-Cuba US blockade must go as soon as possible

Furthermore, we also note the relentless regime change efforts by the US in Cuba. The USA is unrelenting in its attack on the progressive Latin American forces and we note the brazen attempts to destabilise Cuba. Moreover, the US has been persistent in their plans to overthrow socialism and to restore capitalism in the island. As NEHAWU, we will continue with our international support of Cuba as we remain inspired by the commitment of the Cuban people to the ideals of socialism.

On the 31st October 2018 the Cuban government will denounce the tightening of the policies that buttresses the embargo and will once again present to the UN General Assembly the draft resolution entitled “Necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States of America against Cuba”. NEHAWU calls on the UN to play a proactive role in ending this illegal economic embargo because since 1992 the UN General Assembly has passed a resolution every year condemning the ongoing impact of the embargo and declaring it in violation of the Charter of the United Nations and of international law.

We call on all progressive forces across the world to join our call and offer necessary support to the Cubans who are punished for protecting their sovereignty and pursuance of their socialist ideals.
