NEHAWU To Report Back To Eastern Cape Department Of Transport Members On Progress Made on Their Issues

The National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union [NEHAWU] will report back to its members at the Eastern Cape Department of Transport on yesterday’s meeting outcomes regarding the resolutions of issues raised by the national union.

In a general members meeting convened on Monday at the head office of the department our members and workers raised issues to the President and General Secretary that were both affecting them as workers and the department at large as an institution. These issues ranged from compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Skills Development Act, Performance Management and Development System (PMDS), irregular appointments of senior managers and issues related to allegations of corruption, maladministration, fraud, fruitless and wasteful expenditure.

The national union met with the alliance partners in the province on Monday afternoon to discuss a myriad of issues which included our issues at different departments. This culminated into a process of meeting all MECs and Heads of Departments of relevant departments where the union expressed issues of discontent namely: Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism, Department of Social Development, Department of Transport and Department of Public Works. Indeed, on the 12th March 2019 a meeting with the department of transport led by the MEC together with senior management took place where the union placed at the centre four categories of issues with long items per each category ranging from irregularities on legislative frameworks and government policies such as irregular appointments of senior managers, organisational structure of the department which has a direct impact to conditions of services of our members, compliance with Skills Development Act and Occupational Health and Safety Act and allegations of maladministration, wasteful expenditure, fraud and corruption.

In each category of issues the meeting robustly discussed and culminated into a process of resolving and time frames attached to each. At the end of the meeting, an agreement was reached that the Provincial Office Bearers of the union and the senior management of the department led by the acting Head of the department must meet within two weeks to finalise the resolution and implementation of time frames issue by issue. The meeting further agreed on a full investigation regarding allegations levelled against the department on maladministration, wasteful expenditure, fraud and corruption. In this regard, the union confirms that it will fully participate throughout the investigation by submitting the evidence at its disposal with the hope that all those implicated and found guilty shall be prosecuted failing which the initial process of involving law enforcement agencies will be reactivated.

At this point, the national union wishes to set the record straight that it will be turning 32 years old on the 27th June 2019 and it’s a union of non-cowards hence it will not hide its face when raising issues with any employer including government. It is therefore distancing itself from faceless circulation of unsigned documents with its letterhead trending on social media. In this regard, the union remains resolute to its culture and tradition of militancy and fearlessness in its representations of its members particular in exposing the ugly head of maladministration and corruption whenever such arises.

As per the decision of the general meeting held on the 11th March 2019, all members of the union in the department of transport will be briefed on the outcomes of the meeting with the MEC and the meeting between the department and the provincial office set to take place in two weeks’ time on actual resolve of issues for further mandate. The national office bearers led by the President of NEHAWU wish to thank all members of the union in this department and others for being brave and bold in raising issues confronting them without fear and favour and salute them for such.
