NEHAWU congratulates the African National Congress for its overwhelming victory in Wednesday’s national general elections and would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate all our members and volunteers who mobilized to ensure this overwhelming victory.
The people have spoken and all the doubting Thomases have been silenced because this week’s elections demonstrated that the African National Congress is still the party of the majority of South Africans.
The ANC’s has always prided itself of being a non-racial and non-sexist organization that champions the human rights of everyone without fear, favour or prejudice.
The people of this country have shown their loyalty to this 97year icon that led the struggle for liberation with integrity and the service delivery record of the ANC over the last 15 years has not gone unnoticed by the people of this country.
While celebrating this victory, we must not forget our heroes and heroines who dedicated themselves to the struggle, made huge sacrifices and even laid down their lives to help free our nation from apartheid and tyranny.
It is also appropriate that we dedicate this victory to Cde Violet Seboni, COSATU’s 2nd Deputy President who passed away on her way to campaign for the latest ANC victory.
The challenge for all of us now is to work together to reduce the high levels of inequality especially the unemployment that is rampant in this country. We must protect those who are at the bottom end of the economic pyramid but who still demonstrated that they trust the ANC to bring changes to their lives.
The 2009 will be remembered for its unbelievable mobilisation of young people who demonstrated that they are proud of their history and confident of their future by voting overwhelmingly for the ANC.
The challenge now is to build on this momentum and make sure that the people of South Africa defend their democracy and also actively participate in building a better future for all in this country.
