April 11, 2006 Media Statement For immediate release Boqwana's dismissal vindicates Nehawu's view about the problems in the Eastern Cape Health Department Nehawu welcomes the decision by the Eastern Cape Premier, Nosimo Balindlela to relieve MEC Bevan Boqwana of his responsibilities as MEC for Health. The action by the Premier vindicates the view we expressed last week that the problems in the Eastern Cape Department of Health should be placed squarely on former MEC Boqwana's shoulders. We call on the Premier to move with speed in appointing a new MEC, who must refocus the attention of the department on improving service delivery and tightening the management of the affairs of the department. We also wish to caution the re-instated head of department Mr. Lawrence Boya that his days of ignoring the union should come to an end. We advise him to move with speed to mend the relationship with the union in the province.
